Thing#33 Advocacy

This is one of my strong points. I document everything with photos and stories (in house). When I have an event, I invite our superintendent, administration , BOE and the district's public relations officer. She takes great photos , uses the school website, twitter and facebook to promote my programs. I have contests, makerspace activities, etc.

I do not use social media. I don;t want the responsibility of what I write or any comments to effect my employment. Just playing it safe. I really believe in advocacy to promote my library but not to convince parents and administrators that they need me or a LMS.

I read some great articles for this topic and have concluded that I will create a survey in google docs and ask all the seniors to respond to questions about the program . Did they see a difference in the library over the 4 years. How their needs changed, and whether the high school library was able to meet those needs, etc. Also some questions that will help me see if they are college ready and will be comfortable in a college library.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15113854698357651315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846245032430977977.post-34976540174440551272016-05-12T17:14:00.001-07:002016-05-12T17:32:08.286-07:00Thing 31 Evidence based

I used to write a monthly report but I was told that it was not necessary. So I saved myself the trouble and stopped writing them. I have days of being pro evidence based and I get gungho and then I ask myself ,"why/", why do I need to show my worth ,or show that a good library media program and a certified LMS matters to students and staff.
I also do a survey twice a year for staff and students. It usually ends up being another opportunity for staff to ask me to buy something they think they need.
My best way to share my library resources and programs is during our daily COP , Communities of Practice meetings. Try being absent, whenever I'm absent, staff and students need me.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15113854698357651315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846245032430977977.post-30234201379376331332016-01-18T16:39:00.004-08:002016-01-18T16:39:50.894-08:00

I am sorry to see the end of the school tools.

I enjoy discovering new tools and most importantly having the time to browse, tinker and learn at my own pace.

I will continue to add to my Libguides and will use the new tools to make it even better, for example adding screencasts. I enjoyed reviewing and learning about extension, apps and add ons and playing withe browser settings.

I have put the coding tools to use and have started a small group of students in a coding class using Scratch. It is my hope that from the coding skills we can venture into raspberry pi and arduinos.

I had a makers faire for my high school and enjoyed reading the articles on this topic that you shared. They were very helpful.

I always share new tools with other teachers. Its great having so many"cool tools" to share.

I hope that we continue the program and maybe in the future discuss STEaM tools and ideas. Also I recently took a PD class on assistive technology and could use a better perspective and more "cool tools" on this topic.

Hope to be back together in the Fall. Great stuff!!

Thing 29 Student Response Tools

As a teacher we need to gather feedback as a means of formative assessment. Some of the tools discussed in this Thing are great for this need and for creating exit tickets and Do Nows.

I have used Padlet (wallwisher )several times. I decided to try answergarden with my co workers. I asked them : What is your favorite book? Not too original , lol. So, now we have an awesome world cloud and they have a new student response tool. It was a very easy to use tool.

In the past I have used voicethread for instruction and assessment. I have also tried Socrative but students did not take to it. I do really like to use google forms for quizzes. Its especially helpful when combined with flubaroo. I had learned how to do this in a workshop at DC BOCES. I really liked the instructions that Eric Curts created on online assessments using Google Forms.

I used Padlet to ask students as a "do now" , Why do we have a school library? Quizlet is used throughout my school. I plan to take a closer look at Seesaw

This tools can be used to brainstorm or to assess students??

Thing 28 Emerging Tech:

Most new technology is relevant to the school library. New technologies
engage students and give them more options for completing assignments and furthering
their personal and academic goals. I like the idea of students having personal
learning environments and dashboards. I have a MS in instructional technology so
I’m all about new technology.
I hope to have a 3D printer for my students (soon) and to model app
smashing ideas. I have started to
explore
Tellagami, and it looks very interesting.
In one of the articles, they referred to the library as “the
workspace of the future”. I really love this concept. I will be rethinking the
future of the PHS library with this idea in my mind.
The makers movement is a great novel idea for libraries. I
have recently hosted a Makers faire and the students asked for more activities
like we had at the faire. So every Monday I have tried to set up a Makers
project on a small table for students that wish to get involved. It has been
very well received.
Technology trends to date have made it possible for students
to access the library virtually. So the physical space can be re thought as to offerings other
than the typical library resources.
The challenge will be to work within NYS standards to re
define the library. Some important
issues / trends on the horizon other than funding will be equitable access and
digital literacy and citizenship.
These issues are also relevant to the community at large and
the school community

The video by Heidi was very informative. I have tried most of the same ideas in one way or another. Unfortunately it's the same small group of teachers and students that see the value of the library.

I have created screencasts using Jing, talking mascots, an awesome webpage and a makerspace. I'm still not getting the message out because I haven't shown student achievement in a clear and concise way. I have a bulletin board that says,"the road to life- long learning starts at the library." No comments yet from staff or students. My data wall only has checkouts by grades. i do have student work posted.

So my new elevator speech will have to focus on the schools mission and the improvement goals as Heidi mentioned. I also need more of a web presence such as twitter. Every chance I get I ask the school's public relations lady to post about the latest library projects , contests etc. to the school district website. My district is laying off all elementary LMS this year. Its about money and as they say what's mandatory.

Im going to spend the summer re thinking my elevator speech. Sometimes I wonder why we have to show our importance and why administrator cant already see it. i resent justifying my existence at times.

I will tailor my message to my school and community. ( my audience) I need the data and some personal stories to change the thinking in my district.

For a literacy class , I had to write a reader's theater script. My topic was the Holocaust. The professor told me to find a way to really use the script because it was "outstanding"!

So feeling confident, I approached a few social studies teachers at my school. For the most part they said , "they were too busy" .

So I shared the script with another librarian in a different school district and she will have a group of students performing the script on April 18th , which is Holocaust remembrance day.

Ipadio will be the technology " cool tool" used to record the reading.

My first step towards this adventure was to put out kinetic sand, popsicle sticks and origami papers on tables throughout the library. I tried to start small and cheap. Some teachers and friends have been donating legos.

I have tried to get a 3D printer through various grants.

About 3 years ago I created a Dropbox account to replace my USB. I was really happy with this tool and it served its purpose for me. Eventually , I changed to Google drive and have not been using Dropbox . I like that Google Drive has collaboration abilities that I don't have in Dropbox. Im really looking to find a tools that will help me collect all of the blogs, wikis, and other tools I have used and put them in one place. I have so many that I can't remember all of them. I need for the tool to search my name and find all of my online presence. I had a hard time trying to remember and retrieve the information for my blog tonight.

I signed up for an Evernote account and added a video to a notebook. I actually was trying to find a DIY project on video that showed how to create LED necklaces, so I accomplished a few things with this assignment. I tried to create a lesson using Educreations. I had to use my IPAD to use the web tool. It took me a while to figure it out. I always saw other people creating lessons using this format but I didn't know what they were using . Voila now I know its Educreations.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15113854698357651315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846245032430977977.post-20113368118549869872014-02-05T16:44:00.003-08:002014-02-05T16:44:38.363-08:00Thing 14 Social Reading and Book Stuff
For this thing , I decided to revisit Overdrive. I'm so happy that I did. It has improved since I last tried to use it from home. I had to dig around to find my library pin number and card, At last I was sucessful. I tried to search for a James Patterson novel and of course they had several. All of a sudden a light bulb went off and I remembered that a teacher had asked me to buy, " A Child called It" as an ebook.
So, voila ! I searched Overdrive and there it was.

I checked it out after watching the tutorial on how to use Overdrive. I'm so excited to use Overdrive.
However I really need some instruction in working and editing photos.
I made a quick slide suing some photos i had on my desktop. I can see that this could be beneficial for slide shows if I had better photos to work with. Is this ho they do the slide show with the book titles on websites???
check out my first try using <make a gif.com>
I tried to sue it with a summer technology class I taught last summer. I was not able to continue using Edmodo, as I had originally planned because the students did not have access to computers when not at school.

I am fascinated by the MOOCs and have browsed them when I needed to find information for personal needs. I especially like the oil.cmu.edu, this is the Carnegie Mellon MOOC. I see the MOOC as the future of education. Perhaps each BOCES district should have a Library type MOOC and the area librarians could contribute to it. I also enjoy the iTunes University MOOC and have published a lesson on Dewey on the site.

Good reads is also an excellent resource. I like to see what my friends and family are reading to get their advice on good reads.

In this thing, it appears that I have used them more for my own personal enrichment and have not really made them available to students and staff. I will try to mention MOOCS to staff.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15113854698357651315noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846245032430977977.post-61675547650641494752013-12-02T16:03:00.004-08:002013-12-02T16:03:52.780-08:00Thing 11I added a pin for my favorite beach, Rehoboth Beach in Delaware to the collaborative map.
